Appliance Repair Questions & Answers

Appliances eventually need repair or minor adjustments and sometimes we just need to reread the manual for new settings that are unfamiliar. Whatever the case, you will have concerns about some of your appliances and seek the guidance of appliance repair questions and answers. Learning a few tips about appliances might save money in the long run and a bit of frustration too.

Q: Should I repair an appliance or buy a new one?

A: Examine each appliance on a case-by-case basis. If the appliance is a well-made, high-end appliance, give serious consideration to repair. Some repair shops will give you an estimate free of charge before doing the repair and this should give you a ball-park figure as to whether it is worth repairing depending upon the age and wear.

Q: Do repair shops offer warranties on their work?

A: Many do offer a warranty and this is a good question to ask before allowing the repair process.

Q: Can I get cheap parts and have a repairman install them in an appliance?

A: Probably not, because the repair person would not wish to warranty parts that he/she did not order.

Q: The interior light in my refrigerator is not on and the refrigerator is not running, what can I do?

A: Check to see that the electric cord is still plugged into the electric outlet. Sometimes unplugging the cord for five minutes and plugging it back in starts it back up. The bulb inside the refrigerator may need to be replaced. Check your circuit breaker to see that it is still on and flip it back on if necessary. Try replacing a fuse and refer to your refrigerator manual for troubleshooting recommendations.

Q: Why is the refrigerator running constantly?

A:  You may have frost built up in the freezer and it needs defrosting. If the condenser coils are dirty, unplug the refrigerator and clean the coils. Check to see the inner door seal is still firmly attached. Faulty condenser fans can also make a refrigerator run constantly.

Q: What can I do to make my dishwasher clean better?

A: Check the inlet valve for the water flow. It is possible if you have very hard water that the valve could be plugged with sediment and minerals. Clean the valve and see if it resolves the problem.

Q: My microwave quit working, can I fix it?

A: Check to see there is no damage to the microwave electric cord and it is still securely plugged into the wall. Establish that the outlet is still functioning properly by testing it with another electric appliance. Faulty door switches can cause a microwave to quit operating. Wiggle the switch and shut the door several times to see if this fixes the problem. You may have an internal thermal fuse that needs repair. This usually requires a service call.

Q: There is a noise coming out of my dishwasher, what can I do?

A: Check inside the dishwasher around the pump assembly for small objects that could be hitting the pump. Small corn holders or baby utensils may be jamming the pump. Remove objects found and run the dishwasher again.
