How to Survive Architecture School

Architecture School 101

Architecture school is hard work. To become a skilled architect requires years of training both in school and in the field. Deciding to go to architect school is a big decision. Once completed having a degree in architecture can open the door for your lifelong career.

Application Packet

Make sure when applying to architecture schools you pay attention to application deadlines. Waiting a semester longer than you planned may cause your coursework to be stretched out a semester longer than you had anticipated. Make sure your application packet is complete and submitted on time.

Ask for Help

A degree in architecture is a very technical degree. You will be using a lot of advanced math, drawing and planning skills. You may also be required to take some advanced sciences, such as physics, to help round out your education. Sometimes you may not understand lectures or lessons. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, ask for help right away.

Join a Study Group

One of the ways you will survive architecture school is to join a study group. Chances are that your fellow classmates may find themselves struggling along the way as well. If you communicate often with your classmates in a study group setting, you can help each other understand complicated course material.

Study

Architecture will require hours of homework and intense study sessions. Be prepared to have weeks where you cannot join your friends for happy hour. In order to excel at your degree you will need to commit to overtime work at times.
