Areas of Pediatrics

Pediatric doctors address the medical needs of infants, toddlers, children, adolescents and to some extent, young adults. These doctors have specialized knowledge pertaining to the illnesses, injuries and developmental stages experienced by this section of society. There are also specialized areas of pediatrics that address specific health issues as they apply to children.

  • A Pediatric Neurologist is trained in issues that involve the nervous system, including seizures, delayed development of speech and chronic headaches.

  • A Neonatologist is trained to address issues that newborns sometimes experience including birth defects, infections, nutrition and may be consulted during pregnancy if prenatal health issues are detected.

  • Pediatric Allergists have the training to address the conditions of allergies, hay fever, sinusitis, asthma and anaphylaxis (food allergies).

  • A Pediatric Dermatologist is trained in the treatment of skin conditions including birthmarks, warts, dermatitis, vitiligo, hemangiomas and similar skin conditions.

  • Pediatric Endocrinologists diagnose and treat conditions related to the glands and the hormones they produce. This includes growth issues.

  • Pediatric Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat conditions related to the digestive system and liver. Common areas of treatment ilclude gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and liver disease.

  • Pediatric Heart Surgeons address the complicated issues of congenital heart defects as well as those heart health issues that develop during childhood.

  • A Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist is trained to address recurring illnesses, whether they are caused by a parasite, bacteria or some other unknown agent. They also treat Tuberculosis (TB), Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Hepatitis and Meningitis.

  • Pediatric Nephrologists treat disorders and/or diseases of the kidneys and bladder.

  • Pediatric Otolaryngologists are trained to address severe issues affecting the ear, nose and throat.

  • A Pediatric Pulmonologist addresses issues related to the lungs including chronic pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, asthma and apnea.

This list of pediatric specialty areas is not complete; there are a wide variety of medical disciplines whose purpose is to diagnosis and treat children. If your child experiences a medical condition that should be addressed by a particular specialist, your pediatrician will assist in locating the appropriate doctor.
