Facts Against School Uniforms for Students

Arguments Against School Uniforms

The subject of school uniforms has been a controversial one for years. Some feel that uniforms create a sense of commonality and help improve grades, while others feel that squashing a child’s sense of self-expression is more detrimental than helpful.

Since the 1990s, school uniforms have been a hot topic. Some people love the idea of them and feel that they are good for children. Others feel much differently.

Expressing Oneself

Adolescents tend to wear clothing to express themselves. They like to wear clothing that makes them feel empowered and good about themselves. Uniforms do not allow for a child to express themselves during a time where they are trying to figure themselves out.

Money

While some people believe that you are saving money with uniforms, others disagree. You will have to purchase the often expensive pieces of the uniform yourself. Not to mention the clothing that your child will wear when they are not in school. It is usually also required that you purchase more than one piece of the outfits.

Diversity

Many feel that it actually stunts the student’s ability to understand cultural differences. They will have a more difficult time understanding different backgrounds and therefore becoming aware of the importance of tolerance.

Additional Problems

If a child has their uniform in the wash and has to go to school they will get into trouble if they show up out of uniform. It can make something as trivial as getting your school clothes dirty to getting punished for not wearing the required outfit. Many parents find that the uniforms are much more of a hassle to keep up with knowing that your child will be reprimanded if they are not in the proper attire when there are much more important things to focus on.
