Auto Body Painting Tips
Painting your vehicle yourself can be an inexpensive way to give your car a new look and improve its value. Automotive painting requires extensive knowledge and a variety of tools. There are several tips to keep in mind when painting a car to insure it is being done properly.
- Always sand and prime the surface of the vehicle before attempting to paint it. This provides a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to and makes it more likely to go on smoothly. Use a sander and fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Primer can be applied with a painting spray gun.
- Use painter's tape and tape off all windows, lights and trim. You can use the tape to separate the areas and to cover entire windows and lights from paint splatters. Painter's tape can be purchased from your local paint supply store.
- Paint less obvious areas of the vehicle, such as inside the doors and under the hood. Although these parts are not seen as often as other parts, painting them will improve the overall look of the car.
- Use putty to cover any problems areas, holes, scratch or rust spots. Apply the putty with a putty knife, and allow it to dry. Smooth it with a sander. The putty should not be noticeable one the car is painted.
- Use a paint gun to apply the paint to the vehicle. A good quality paint gun sprays the paint on in even coats and reduces dripping and running. Paint guns can be plugged into an electric outlet and used for a long time if needed. They are available from most automotive parts stores and from many paint supply stores.
