Basic Computer Repair Tutorial
Often, when a computer is not working properly, there is not actually anything seriously wrong with the machine. Instead, it is usually an issue that easily be addressed by following a few simple suggestions. There are solutions that should be tried when there is something wrong, before calling a professional support line or bringing it in to a computer repair shop.
- The first step to try whenever a computer begins acting up is to turn off the computer and turn it back on. There is a proper way to do this; however, it not the same as quickly pressing the power button in and out. On the back of the computer case, there is usually an additional power switch, separate from the main power button on the front of the computer. This button directly cuts off electricity access to the machine, while the front button starts and powers down the computer processor. When there is a computer issue, it is best to first shut the computer down using the operating system, if possible. Then, once the operating system turns the computer off normally, flip the switch on the back of the computer case. Wait several seconds, flip the back switch into the on position and proceed to power the computer normally. This will often fix common computer problems, as it allows the computer to completely reset.
- Slow operating system issues may be caused by anti-virus software running constantly in the background. The solution to this issue is to schedule the anti-virus system to run its scans during off-peak computer usage hours, instead of during active use. It can still scan new files and protect the computer online. It just does not usually need to actively scan the hard drive constantly. Never turn the anti-virus software completely off, just schedule it appropriately.
- When the Internet suddenly stops working, the best first step to take is to check and make sure all plugs to the router and computer are securely connected. If you are using a wireless router, check the router's power cord, it may have accidentally been pulled free. Once the cords are checked, turn the power switch on the router off and back on to allow it to reset. Often, this will quickly restore Internet service.
