Basics of Cleaning Windows
Cleaning windows takes a little patience and a lot of attention to detail. Spots not cleaned properly will easily be noticed. It's easy to leave streaks if you don't clean or dry the windows properly. When done properly, you should notice a big difference. Clean windows help the overall appearance of a house. Having the right products and tools is very important.
- Mix window cleaning soap with water in a bucket. Window cleaning soap can be found in most home improvement stores. Choose a bucket that is easy to carry around the house and up and down ladders.
- Squeegees, scrapers, window scrubbers and towels are the most common tools used. Scrubbers are used to apply the soap to the windows, while scrapers and squeegees are used to remove the soap. Rubber edged squeegees are a popular choice. Use a dry towel to remove any access soap and water to help prevent streaks. Make sure to wipe down the edges and sills of the windows to prevent soap and water from running down to other windows. Choose a towel that doesn't shed particles. Consult with an expert at a local home improvement store about specific towels.
- Using a spray bottle to apply the soap and water to windows is another alternative. This reduces the risk of spilling soap and water indoors.
- Consider using a belt to hold your tools. Laying them on the ground or on window sills increases the chance of dirt getting on them. Your windows could become scratched if enough dirt builds up on the squeegee or scrubber.
- Wash windows when there is minimal sunlight. The sun dries the soap faster making it harder to clean.
