Bathtub Drain Replacement

If you are remodeling your bathroom, chances are you will be replacing the bathtub as well. If you replace your old bathtub with a new one, you will need to know how to install the drain in your new bathtub. This process is not that hard to do, and can easily be completed on your own in no time at all. All you need are a few simple materials and a little bit of time to complete the job.

  1. Apply plumber's putty around the perimeter of the underside of the drains flange. It is often helpful to roll the plumber's putty into a snake like shape for easier application.

  2. Hold the drain screw and basket in place while you tighten the screw into place.

  3. Place the rubber gasket cover onto the bathtub overflow basket.

  4. Attach a T-fitting to your overflow pipe, and attach with a nut and washer to hold it into place.

  5. Connect the overflow pipe to the drain pipe using the T fitting that you have attached to your overflow pipe previously.

  6. Tighten down all nuts with joint pliers so that all fittings are snug and secure to prevent any leaks from occurring.

  7. Attach the tailpiece to the overflow pipe, using a light coating of joint compound to ensure that a proper seal is formed.

  8. Attach the tail piece to the trap pipe using the T-fitting that is provided.

  9. Add a compression nut and washer to the tailpiece to provide added security to the fitting joint.

  10. Connect the waste trip plate to the overflow pipe and secure with the provided screws using a standard Phillips or flat head screwdriver depending on which type is used for your plate.

  11. Attach the drain screen to your waster paste to prevent any large debris from passing into your drainage pipe and causing a blockage later on.

  12. Attach the drain's stopper either by turning it into place or securing it with a screw depending on the type of drain stopper that came with the specific drain that you purchased for your bathtub.
