Benefits of Mixing Paint Colors

When you want a custom color, generally you will go somwhere that mixes paint such as Home Depot, Walmart or Lowe's. These places take basic white paint and inject different colors into it then mix it to create the desired color. If the color doesn't come out the way you'd like or you just need a little, you're still stuck buying the whole can.

For reasons like those stated above, there are benefits to mixing paint yourself:

  • Cost efficient - It is cheap and easy to mix your own paint. You can control the amount of paint you are mixing so that you are not stuck with huge batches of colors you may never use again.

  • Better colors - You can work on your desired color until it is perfect. If it is a little too light, add in a little more color. If it's a little too dark, add in more white. You don't have to worry about long lines or a grumpy retail worker.

  • Desired consistency - Depending on what type of project you are working on, you may not want evenly mixed paint. For projects such as painting grass, paint that isn't thoroughly mixed can give a great variation in color such as an array of light and dark greens.

You may have the idea that it is hard to mix your own paint. But really, it is very easy to do. All you need is base colors, such as white, primary colors and containers or a palette. What you use to mix your color in depends on how much paint your project requires.

Just remember these simple formulas and go from there: red + blue = purple, red + yellow = orange, blue + yellow = green, all three = brown.
