How to Consume Whey Protein

Best Sources of Whey Protein

The human body requires protein to survive and build muscle and repair tissues. Whey protein is an excellent source of protein and can be found in many common foods. It is an easily digested and promotes an overall healthy diet.

Sources of Whey Protein

  • Egg is one of the best sources of whey protein. It is considered the gold standard when comparing other food items in amounts of whey protein they provide.

  • Ricotta cheese is a waste product from processing dairy milk. Ricotta cheese is high in protein, having 28 grams of protein per cup, but it is also very high in fat. It is the most abundant food source of whey protein.

  • Dairy milk contains 20 percent whey protein. It is typically digested quickly by the body, but often times is not digested fully.

  • Goat's milk digests more readily than cow's milk and allows for better absorption of the minerals and proteins. Goat's milk also typically has fewer antibiotics and hormones than traditional cow's milk.

  • Beef contains high amounts of protein, and if lean beef is chosen, beef can be part of healthy diet.

  • Cheese such as cottage cheese, cheddar, provolone, string cheese and Swiss cheese have small amounts of whey protein.

  • Yogurt contains 14 grams of protein per cup on average, much of which comes from whey protein. Yogurt is also high in calcium and contains healthy live cultures of bacteria which can be good for the digestive tract.
