Best Way to Avoid Being Ripped Off With Auto Repairs

When your car needs repairs, taking it in to an auto shop can quickly add up to more than you anticipated. Because cars are an important part of our lives, completely avoiding expensive repairs isn't always an option. There are however, ways to avoid being ripped off by dishonest mechanics and repair shops that charge excessively high rates.

Get an Estimate

Never agree to pay for repairs on your car without first getting an estimate. Instruct the repair shop to contact you with an estimate of what repairs are needed and how much it will cost before they actually begin working on the vehicle. This way if you are uncomfortable with what you are being charged, you will have the opportunity to call other repair shops and ask what they charge for the same repairs.

Don't Sign a Blank Work Order

If presented with a blank order when you initially drop off your vehicle, do not sign it. If an auto repair shop or mechanic is honest, they should never ask you to sign a blank contract, which is the equivalent of signing a blank check. This way you will reduce the risk of paying for repairs that you did not approve of.

Get a Warranty

Ask about warranties on the repairs that you are having done. Many auto shops offer a warranty for as little as several months to one year depending on what type of work your having done. If there is no warranty offered, you may want to consider another repair shop.

Get a Second Opinion

If the recommended repairs seem excessive or unnecessary for the type of problem that you are having, take your car to another mechanic for an evaluation and estimate.

Asked for Old Parts

Ask your mechanic to give you any old parts that are being removed and replaced with new parts. This way you'll know that the work has been done and that you are not paying for something that has not been done.

Take it For a Test Drive

Ask if one of the mechanics can go with you for a quick test drive when you come to pick up your car. This way, if the same problems that you were experiencing prior to the supposed repairs still exist, the mechanic will be able to experience it with you before you leave or pay for repairs that may not have been completed.
