Best Way to Clean an Army Helmet

Army Helmet

An army helmet is protective headgear made of bullet proof Kevlar. Ballistic tests have been carried out which show that the helmet (PASGT) can stop 9mm bullets. If the bullet creates a dent in a tight fitting helmet, this can be dangerous. Kevlar is a durable, synthetic fiber manufactured by DuPont. It is important to take good care of the helmet by properly cleaning the Kevlar.

Items Needed:

  • Replacement Padding
  • Soft Cloth
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Detergent
  • Adhesive Strips

Instructions:

  1. Ensure you obtain the right materials to replace the used padding. Remove the material inside the helmet, which entails the suspension system.
  2. Separate all the accessories such as the face mask or chin strap from the helmet. Wash the strap separately using a soft brush, soap and water to remove all the sweat stains.
  3. Brush off any lint or dust using a soft brush. Make sure you remove any dried stains. Spray spot cleaner on a cloth and dab at any spots until they come off.
  4. Clean the interior of the helmet using rubbing alcohol to make sure the new padding you use will stick.
  5. Press self –adhesive strips on the inside of the helmet. Apply the strips all around the crown of the helmet.
  6. Fix the new pads by carefully sticking them on the adhesive strips. Press them down to ensure they stick well.
  7. Using a damp cloth wash the outside of the helmet thoroughly using soap and water. Remove any soap residue using a dry cloth.

  8. Place the helmet on a clean surface and let it air dry.
  9. Reinstall the strap unit that you had removed after the helmet has dried.
  10. Clean a small test patch to ensure it is safe to use your type of detergent. This is especially so if the helmet is antique. The modern ones are more durable and easy to clean and most detergents can be used.
