Best Ways to Care for a Fine Garden
Many people have an intimate love for gardening. If this is an activity you want to get into, it is important that you have knowledge of how to make it work. Starting your own garden can be a fun and exciting hobby, but for it to be successful it requires time, proper care and maintenance. Here are some tips on how to care for your garden.
- Start the garden in areas that receive adequate exposure to sun. It is crucial to choose a location for the garden that receives up to six or eight hours of sunlight a day, unless you intend to grow a shade plant. Herbs, garden vegetables and most flowers do well in a sunny location.
- Check soil regularly for adequate moisture. Garden areas that are shaded by large structures or trees often don't get the rain from which they can benefit. Shrub or large tree roots absorb available moisture, worsening the problem for smaller flowers and plants. Water the soil to keep it moist but not soaking wet. You can water the soil two to three times a week to maintain adequate moisture. It is not a good idea to let the soil become completely dry. Yellowing leaves are a sure sign of inadequate watering.
- Fertilize the soil. It is important to maintain a nutrient-rich soil environment. For best results, use a balanced fertilizer during the spring season and a few times again during the growing season. Adding fertilizers in this manner will help boost nutrient content of the soil. Mulching will also control weeds and improve moisture retention. Possible mulches include shredded leaves, wood chips, straw or grass clipping. Composting your yard and kitchen waste turns garbage into nutrients that enriches the soil and helps the garden plants flourish.
