Best Ways to Clean Mold on Cement Foundation

If your foundation has any small hairline cracks it may be enough to allow water to seep in and cause mold to form and grow on your foundation. Mold can grow and spread so cleaning your foundation immediately with a cleaner that removes and disinfects your foundation is very important. Mold can lead to many health problems and should be removed as soon as possible.

Materials

  • Respiratory mask

  • Rubber gloves

  • Large bucket

  • Large sponge

  • Scrub brush

  • Warm water

  • Bleach

  • Fans

  • Dehumidifier

Instructions:

  1. Put on your safety gear such as respiratory mask and rubber gloves to protect you from the mold spores as well as the harsh chemical fumes that bleach produces.

  2. Open all windows, and add fans to the doorways to blow out the mold spores and cleaning fumes. Proper ventilation also allows the surface of your foundation to dry quicker once the mold is removed.

  3. Add 1 cup of bleach for every gallon of water that you bucket holds. For a 5 gallon bucket you could add 5 gallons of water and 5 cups of bleach. Be sure that the bleach is thoroughly mixed into the water.

  4. Submerge your sponge into the cleaning solution and apply to the affected areas of your cement foundation working your way around until the entire foundation has been cleaned and disinfected.

  5. Rinse the foundation with cool, clean water removing any remaining mold that you may see.

  6. Apply pressure from a scrub brush on any stubborn mold spots that may still be on your foundation. Rinse after you have removed the mold.

  7. Empty your bucket into a large utility sink carefully and rinse out to remove any remaining mold particles that may have settled on the bottom of the bucket.

  8. Plug in and turn on a quality dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the air so that the foundation can easily dry so mold is not allowed to form due to excessive moisture.
