How to Choose PVC Patio Furniture

Building PVC Patio Furniture

PVC furniture has become increasingly popular for patios for many reasons. It is cheaper than traditional furniture, and is not susceptible to rain and other weather like many other patio furniture. When building your own PVC patio furniture, you have the added benefit of creativity in design.

What you will need:

Furniture plans, measuring tape, hacksaw, sandpaper, PVC pipe and connectors/couplings, PVC cement

Building PVC furniture:

  1. Put together plans for the furniture you want to build. Some are available for download online.

  2. Purchase PVC pipe for the job, making sure that you have the connectors (including couplings and elbows, as needed) to make the shapes you are trying to make in accordance with your plans. Make sure all of the pipe is the same size, including the connectors.

  3. Using a hacksaw, saw the PVC pipe into the the desired lengths, according to the plans. When cutting the pipe, the edges will be very rough. Sand them until they are smooth.

  4. Set up the PVC pieces according to your plans. Make sure to assemble the pipe into the desired shapes, and that everything fits together before using the cement.

  5. Layer the cement to the ends of the pipe and to the inside of the connector. Make sure to cement one joint at a time. This will prevent the cement from drying before it is all glued together. The cement will hold the PVC pipes and connectors together and maintain its shape.

  6. Complete the project with wood or other decorative items, if desired. These should be screwed into the pipe.
