Computer RAM Installation
Upgrading your computer's RAM can help to improve the performance of your PC and extend its usable life. Adding RAM can help speed up applications, allow you to multitask more efficiently and cut down on memory related crashes. Fortunately, RAM is relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
Materials
- Nonmagnetic screwdriver
- Computer manual, either the original or printed instructions for opening the computer's case from the manufacturer's site
- Anti-static wrist wraps (optional)
- RAM modules appropriate for your computer
Procedure
- Turn off the computer, monitor, speakers, printer and other accessories.
- Unplug the computer.
- Put on the anti static wrist wraps, or ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal part of the computer case. Keep your feet planted while working. If you have to move, remember to ground yourself again before touching anything inside the computer. Static can destroy computer components.
- Check the manual for directions on how to open the case of your computer. Use the screwdriver to remove any screws holding the case closed, and remove the cover of the computer case.
- Locate the DIMM (dual in-line memory module) slots inside the computer. These are usually black and have ejector clips at each end. Some of them will have modules installed.
- Determine if you have enough empty slots for the RAM you want to install. If so, skip to step 8. Otherwise, proceed to step 7.
- Find the RAM module you need to replace. Press down on the ejector clips and pull the module free.
- Remove the new module from the package, and grasp it by the edges.
- Choose the lowest numbered open slot in which to install the module. If there are no numbers, choose the spot nearest to the already installed modules.
- Line up the notches on the gold side of the module with the keys in the DIMM slot. If they don't match, turn the module around. The direction of the stickers on the module is not important.
- Press the module into the slot with your thumbs on the top edge. Press hard. You need about 20 pounds of pressure to seat the module correctly. Keep pressing until you hear a click, and the ejector clips snap closed,.
- Plug the computer in and turn it on to check the installation before closing the case. If you installed the memory correctly, the computer will display the new memory amount at start up and in the "Properties" tab under "My Computer." If it does not display correctly, unplug the computer and check the installation.
- Turn off the computer, and replace the cover.
Tips
- Blow dust out of your computer using compressed air while you have the cover off. This will help you seat the memory correctly, and it will help keep your computer running smoothly.
- Make sure you purchase the correct memory type for your computer. Incompatible memory can cause expensive problems.
