Hair replacement surgery is becoming a popular way for both men and women to regain their self-esteem. There are different methods of doing this and the cost can vary. The price depends upon the method that is used and the amount of hair that is to be replaced. The final cost of hair replacement may vary between $1,200 to as much as $10,000.

Initial Consultation

The first step to hair replacement surgery is meeting with the surgeon to discuss what type of hair replacement options you have and to get a cost estimation for the service. Normally this consultation will be free of charge. In the event there is a consultation fee, it is not usually more than $100.

Hair Grafts

If hair grafting is the chosen method, this cost is determined by how many grafts need to be put in to achieve the patient's desired amount of hair. Grafts can vary in price from $3 each to $9 each. However, each graft only covers a small area of the scalp and it is common for a patient to need 1,000 or more grafts.

Other Procedures

Other procedures are also available, although they are less common. Among these are scalp lifts, scalp rotations, scalp reduction, hair extensions and hair flaps. Again, depending upon the amount of hair needing to be replaced, these procedures can cost just as much as hair replacement surgery.

Additional Costs

Even after hair replacement surgery is completed, there are additional costs to be considered. Normal upkeep must be done every 5 to 6 weeks. If the procedure has been done on a large area of the scalp, it may need to be redone once a year. This can mean a cost of up to $2,000 annually to keep the hair looking like natural hair.
