Cycling Tips for Beginners
Many people use cycling as a green alternative to automobiles. The cycling movement has drawn many beginner cyclists who have not cycled since they were children or who have not cycled at all. Cycling can be intimidating to a beginner. With a little practice, cycling will become second nature.
- Have the bike fitted. Each person needs a specific size bike for their frame, build and weight. Riding a bike that is too big or too small can lead to injury. Many beginners set their seats too low because it is easier to come to a complete stop that way. Before cycling, take your bike to a professional to adjust the seat and handlebars.
- Practice stopping. People riding a properly fitted bike should have a bit of trouble touching the ground without sliding down on the saddle. This means stopping and starting must happen when the buttocks are off the seat. Practice this in an empty parking lot.
- Go places you enjoy. To ensure you continue cycling, take trips to places you enjoy. Riding along forest roads, oceans and lakes can be an inspiration to new riders.
- Join a bicycle group. A bicycle group consists of all levels of riders. Use the group to get new route ideas and to receive tips on proper bicycle riding. Do not be intimidated by long group rides.
- Do not take the same route you drive. Find quieter routes that are bicycle friendly. Do not take your bike on busy roadways where you may not be seen.
- Wear proper safety gear. Helmets protect your head in the event of an accident. Wear light colored and reflective clothing to increase visibility. At nighttime, use a flashing light on the front and back of your bike.
