DIY Bathroom Wall Tile Project
Ceramic wall tile adds incredible amounts of ambiance to a bathroom. The glazed surface, the organically rounded corners and the geometrically even lines of mortar all work together to make a tiled room a unique environment. Tile, though, is not inexpensive. It also has the potential to overwhelm a small bathroom. Tiling projects are available to fit small rooms and small budgets.
- “Frame” a single tile. One tile stuck to a wall by itself looks like an afterthought or worse, a patch job. Take one decorative 4-inch or 6-inch unit, though, attach it to the wall and surround it with coordinating or contrasting 1-inch tiles and you have a work of art.
- Create a baseboard. If the intersection of your wall and the floor does not interest you, remove the existing baseboard and replace it with a line of contrasting or decorative tiles. This is one area where you can get away with dark colored tiles. A similar effect can be attained at the intersection of wall and ceiling.
- Make a window frame. If your window appears to just sink into the wall, add a frame of tile all around it to perk it up. Be sure to incorporate a way to hang draperies if necessary.
- Use two highly decorative tiles. Attach them to the wall, one on each side of your toilet roll holder. In this case, the impression you are after is not that the tiles are part of the wall but that they are part of the holder. The bolder the design of these tiles, the better.
- Update an elderly vanity countertop with a new ceramic surface. This will only work if the sink is removable, of course. If it is, tile the whole top surface of the counter as well as the exposed edges. The backsplash can be of the same material or contrasting tiles may be used.
- Pull a room together with tile. Perhaps your room seems disconnected, with walls of one color, a floor of another and possibly a third intended for linens and accessories. Add a line of small tiles in those colors, randomly arranged and watch your room perk up.
Ceramic tile beautifies a room and increases its apparent value. Even a tiny bathroom takes on a posh air when ceramic tiles are used there. Try ceramic tile to enhance the decorative effect of your bathroom.
