How to Clean an Outdoor Central Air Unit

DIY Central Air Repair Troubleshooting Tips

There is nothing worse than your central air not working, especially when it is gross outside and you need some cool/ warm air in your home. When it comes to troubleshooting your central air it can be done on your own.

  1. Verify that your thermostat is set to air or heat depending on which you need at the time. If it is not set to the proper setting, it will not work properly.

  2. Check all the vents to make sure that they are open. If the vents aren't open then your hot or cool air is not going to blow properly and you will have the opposite of what you were wanting.

  3. Open the door to the circuit panel and make sure that there is not a blown circuit or fuse. Reset the breaker or replace the fuse if one is blown to see whether or not the unit comes on.

  4. Verify that you have the central air turned on. It might sound simple, but sometimes, it can be bumped and the central air can be turned off. The disconnect switch located on the unit should also be checked. If it is in the off position, it will not turn on.

  5. Replace the filter of the central air unit. If the filter is too dirty, than you need to change it so that it will filter the air properly. It might not be that your central air unit isn't working but it's working poorly because of a dirty filter.
