DIY Pole Garage Workshop

Having a pole garage is an inexpensive alternative to a traditional garage. Instead of needing a concrete foundation, all you need for a pole garage are beams and poles for support. It should be noted that secure placement of the poles needs to be ensured so that the roof is stable.

  1. Contact your local county building ordinance office. Find out if you need to have a permit to build your pole garage. Failure to obtain the proper permit can result in having to tear the structure down and start over.

  2. Inspect the area that you plan to build on. The area needs to be as level as possible. If not then you may have to dig or build up to make your ground level enough for the garage. Once you have established level ground, label the four corners of the building with stakes.

  3. Begin digging your trench. Dig from the nearest electrical source out to where the garage will be built. Next, put your electrical conduit pipe in the trench.

  4. Locate the middle of the garage. Tie a string to each of the two corners making an "X" in the middle of the garage. The meeting point will designate the central location of the garage. Make sure to measure the strings to make sure that they are all the same length. If not, then the garage will not be level.

  5. Set up your poles. Once you have designated the center of the garage you are ready to set up the poles. Before you set them in, you need to apply a generous amount of roofing tar to the bottom of the poles to prevent rotting.

  6. Pour concrete around the holes. Once you have placed the poles in the holes, pour concrete around the holes to fill them. While the concrete dries, you may attach the pre-hung roof and doors to your garage.
