Dangers of Using a Tanning Bed
Many people use tanning beds as a convenient way to get a tan. However, tanning beds can be dangerous and cause problems because they emit of the high levels of ultra violet light. This may result in skin damage, a higher risk of cancer, a lowered immune system and more.
Tanning beds expose people to an excess of UV light or radiation, which experts say can increase the risks of skin cancers such as melanoma. Only a short time in a tanning bed is equal to a whole day in the sun. According to the Skin Care Foundation, people that use a tanning bed regularly before age 35 have a 15 percent higher risk of melanoma. International cancer experts say that ultraviolet radiation is one of the top risks for cancer.
Regular use of a tanning bed can cause severe dryness of the skin and premature aging or wrinkles. This is due to the ultra violet rays breaking down healthy skin cells. Tanning beds can also burn the skin just like the sun. People taking certain kinds of medication should use caution when using a tanning bed because the skin may be more sensitive and burn easier. People with pigmentation problems often make it worse when they use a tanning bed.
Tanning bed dangers also include a weakened immune system which increases the chance for disease. Other dangers are damage to the retina and cornea. Certain kinds of cataracts may also occur. Protective eyewear is very important, but it doesn’t completely protect the eyes from UV rays.
