Decorating Cupcakes Using Fondant

Creating personally designed and decorated cupcakes has become a wildly popular party gift lately and many believe it requires a lot of baking know-how to create these delightful confections. The truth is, all you really need are the right tools, a bit of ingenuity and the desire to create your own.

Items Needed:

  • Light blue rolled or marshmallow Fondant

  • Rose pink rolled or marshmallow Fondant

  • Edible silver sugar ball accents

  • New clean household sponge

  • Zip lock back

  • Fondant roller

  • Four petal cookie or decorators cutter

  • Cupcakes

  • Fondant roller

  • Fondant rolling pad

  • Glass bowl

  • Small bowl of water

  • Fine tipped paint brush

  • Wax paper

  • Edible cake decorators glitter

  • Ball tipped fondant tool

  • Wax paper

  • Round cookie or biscuit cutter the size of a cupcake top

  • Confectioner’s sugar

  1. Place your new household sponge inside a small zip lock bag. Seal and set aside.

  2. Arrange your work area so that you have a sheet of wax paper placed directly in front of your fondant rolling pad. You will be placing decorations on this as you work.

  3. Keep the bowl of water near by and place the fine detain paint brush inside of the bowl to have it saturated and on hand when you need it.

  4. Take out a small portion of your light blue rolling or marshmallow fondant.

  5. Work the fondant in your hands for a moment, kneading it gently to make it more workable.

  6. Place the fondant on to your rolling pad and use your fondant roller to create an area that will support the circumference of your round cookie cutter. If you find that the fondant is sticking to your roller or your hands sprinkle a little confectioner’s sugar on your hands and then rub them along your fondant roller to help guard against excessive sticking.

  7. When you have a large enough area rolled out, place your round cookie or biscuit cutter in the center of the fondant and press down firmly. Avoid excessive twisting. This will cut a portion of the fondant away from the rolled base.

  8. Remove the rolled base surrounding the fondant before lifting the cutter from your cut design.

  9. Place the excess fondant under the dome of a glass bowl to keep it from drying out.

  10. Place the cut out portion of the blue fondant on to the top of one of the cupcakes.

  11. Using your hands and fingers, smooth the fondant over the edges of the cupcake to ensure that it stays on. Set aside.

  12. Take out a small portion of your rose colored fondant and roll it out to a thin base.

  13. Use your four petal cutter on the rose fondant, cutting out two separate instances of the design. Move these to the wax paper in front of your rolling pad.

  14. Place excess fondant under the dome of the glass bowl.

  15. Place your sponge wrapped in its sealed zip lock bag in the center of your rolling pad and set one of the four petal designs on the surface of the sponge. The zip lock bag protects your fondant while the sponge provides a soft surface on which to work.

  16. Press your ball tipped fondant tool into the center of each petal of the design, this will cause the petals to curl inward, giving them depth. Do this to each of the petal designs you have cut out.

  17. Place the first petal design you worked on back onto the surface of the zip lock wrapped sponge and use your fine detail paint brush to apply a small amount of water to the center of the design.

  18. Place the second petal design on to that of the second, arranging its petals at an angle of those of the first so that the center space of each petal of the first design is now covered by the petals of the second design.

  19. Use your ball tipped fondant tool to press firmly into the center of the two petal designs, connecting them and creating a hollow in the center of the newly created flower.

  20. Use your paint brush to apply more water into the hollow in the center of the flower and remove six edible silver sugar balls from your container and place them into the hollow in the center of the petals. Press down firmly on the balls with the tip of your fondant tool.

  21. Place a small amount of water onto the fondant surface of the cupcake where you would like the flower to be placed. The water acts as glue and will prevent your flower from falling off.

  22. Place the flower where you want it to go and move on to the next cupcake.
