Defense Attorney Skills
A defense attorney is someone who has been trained in the subject of the law and the court system. They are highly skilled due to the amount of time in school. It takes a long period of time and practice to achieve the level of skill needed to be a law professional including the memorization of some very specific legal definitions.
- Court Etiquette – A defense attorney must use the ability to be able to adjust to any situation that is introduced to him or her. This is important because the attorney is trained to understand all things in writing. However, different local court systems may have different procedures that the attorney will have to know them to be able to proceed successfully.
- Outline Situation – The attorney must be able to thoroughly read over reports and evidence and then tell the client what to expect in a matter of fact way. Telling the client the way to proceed step-by-step must be done with no stalling or masking the situation. A lawyer should be able to persuade the client towards the correct way to plead or to accept a plea bargain if need be.
- Legal Interpretations – The defense attorney needs to be able to understand criminal law and be able to find the hidden meaning of things after reading the state and federal constitutions closely.
- Client's Advocate – An important definition of a defense attorney is to be an advocate for a client. It is important that the attorney works with a client and provides good council to them to help them avoid further problems with the law. Therefore, the attorney needs to find a fit for the client with a good sentencing program. Each clients needs are different and the attorney needs to understand each clients different needs.
- Gathering Information – An attorney needs to be organized and prepare by hiring investigators to search for credible information and evidence to help their defendant. Also important is interviewing the prosecution witnesses to collect the information needed to go along with other evidence for the case. All of these things help in defending the client.
