How to be an Art Photography Major

Definition of Fine Art Photography

There is debate regarding the one true definition of fine art photography.  Some claim that it is indeed a definition and others claim that it is not a definition and that it is simply a method for photographers to call themselves artists.  Regardless, many supporters regard the work of some photographers as fine art.

Art Definition

According to the English Oxford Dictionary, The word “Art” is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”  Considering that photography is also an expression of skill, a visual form, and is appreciated purely for its emotional power, it is safe to say that art photography can fall under the category of art.

Fine Art Definition

Alternately, the Oxford Dictionary defines “Fine Art” as “creative art, especially visual art, whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content.”  Since photography is a visual art and aesthetic, perhaps some photography can be considered fine art.

Conclusion

Perhaps this debate will or will not end soon, but it is safe to say that this is a passionate topic amongst some art photographers and fine artists.  Just as not all artists are considered to be fine artists, not all art photographers are considered to be fine art photographers.  Perhaps the distinction is in the eye of the beholder as to whether some art photography is considered fine art.
