Definition of an Alternative Certification
Not everyone wants to study education and then specialize in a particular branch of education. Some people are interested in nursing, math or biology, and would rather focus on their main passion, but still achieve their desired goal of becoming a teacher. This particular route is known as earning an alternative certification. It also benefits individuals who change their mind about the field of study they chose.
General Information
Many teachers choose to earn a degree in early childhood education or another similar program to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming a teacher. They decide which fields of study they want to teach after they earn their license to educate. However, some potential teachers do not want to focus on education or decide to become a teacher while they are earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry or art history. An alternative education certification allows these individuals to teach without earning a degree in education.
Process
A prospective teacher who earns an alternative certification undergoes a bachelor's degree program in his or her chosen field. A student may enter into an alternative certification program, where an individual earns his or her degree in a shorter amount of time, since less coursework will be required. Upon completion, a student must take the appropriate test to earn licensure in teaching. Always remember to check the prerequisites prior to enrolling in a program.
School Environment
Some schools offer alternative certification programs through online coursework. In some cases, universities offer accelerated education programs for students who already earned a four-year degree. These programs consist of online and on-campus coursework. School districts with a shortage of teachers may extend the option to certify individuals who already have a degree. When the district gives this opportunity, it usually is only for educational backgrounds needed by the school.
