Diet and Nutrition for Bodybuilding
Like most athletes, bodybuilders must commit to discipline and restraint. One of the most important aspects of a bodybuilder's training regimen is his diet. If the athlete is not getting the proper amounts of vitamins and nutrients, the body will not have the fuel needed to build muscle.
Proteins
Proteins are one of the essential nutrients that are needed to build muscle. Proteins can also help heal torn or stretched muscles. You can get protein from chicken, beans, peanut butter and legumes.
Water
Water is one of the main fuel supplies for the body. If a bodybuilder is not properly hydrated, he fails to build more muscles, and the muscles he already has will cramp. Bodybuilders should drink at least 8 ounces of water for every 10 pounds they weigh. Any less could lead to poor dehydration and a break down of the muscles.
Fats
Healthy fats enable the body to store water and nutrients that the muscles will use over time. A bodybuilder should include healthy fats in every meal, and fats should account for 25 percent of the diet. Healthy fats include nuts and oils.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates provide the body with energy and give the bodybuilder the momentum and strength to work out for long periods. Complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole grains, rice and potatoes, are burned slowly and can power the body for long a long time. If the body does not have the proper amount of carbohydrates, it will begin to burn muscles as fuel.
Supplements
Supplements can be taken if a bodybuilder cannot consume the proper amount of nutrients and vitamins in his meals. Protein powders, vitamins, fish oil and shakes are a few examples of the types of supplements available for bodybuilders. Supplements can be purchased from most department stores and health food stores.
