How to Arrange an Office Desk Ergonomically

Different Office Desk Arrangements

A business may use several approaches to arranging the desks for its workers. These include a traditional arrangement, cubicle farms, open arrangements and hot desks. The best office desk arrangement depends on the type of business, especially the amount of interaction required between workers and customers.

Traditional Arrangement

A traditional desk arrangement places managers in enclosed offices. Lower ranking employees work in large open rooms with the desks arranged in rows. Workers in a traditional arrangement may have partitions around their desks.

Cubicle Farm

A cubicle farm arranges desks and an office using partitions around each desk that may rise to the ceiling to create a feeling of privacy. The partitions can easily be disassembled and rearranged to change the way in which the office space is used. The partitions also form an entry and exit to the cubicle farm.

Open Desks

An open desk arrangement uses dividers that are only slightly higher than the desks to create boundaries for each worker. Each desk has its own telephone and computer, although workers typically share peripheral devices such as printers. An open desk arrangement is most common in businesses that require frequent communication between workers.

Hot Desks

A hot desk arrangement consists of more than one employee using the same desk at different times. This allows the business to maximize the use of floor space. Hot desk arrangements are most common in businesses where employees spend a large amount of their working time outside the office. It is also used in offices that use temporary employees.
