Different Styles of Patio Blocks
There are many considerations in choosing a patio block appropriate for your patio. Cost is certainly a consideration, but you want to choose a design that compliments your home and backyard features. The design layout of your patio will also certainly affect the style of block that you choose.
Building a patio can add practicality and aesthetic value to your home backyard space. Outdoor living is a great amenity and selling feature for virtually any home. When considering a patio design, there are a seemingly endless number of options that the homeowner can employ. Selecting the particular style of patio block to be used should be done in conjunction with the style of your home, backyard space, expected usage and geographic area. Consider the size of the blocks to be used as you consider the overall design of your patio.
- Brick: This patio block style is similar to home construction brick, but is typically not quite as thick. Brick style patio blocks are usually about 1 or 2 inches thick – about half the thickness of the brick used in home construction. Typical use in patio design is a staggered pattern or a basket weave pattern, though the options are endless.
- Pavers: These are typically hexagonal in shape and are sometimes referred to as honeycomb blocks. The benefit of these blocks is that the interlocking design creates a much more sturdy surface for your patio. Block size averages at 14- or 18-inch pieces.
- Square Patio Blocks: These are typically 12-, 16-, 18- or 24-inch squares and are typically 1 or 2 inches thick. The blocks also come in a variety of colors. Many homeowners using square blocks choose to utilize two colors in order to create a checkerboard pattern. An almost endless number of patterns can be completed depending on the homeowner’s choice.
