Disability Claim Information
Individuals who are disabled and are no longer able to support themselves may be eligible for Social Security benefits. The program is a federal government funded program. It assists those who are disabled with medical and financial support. You will be required to fill out an application to see if you qualify.
Who Qualifies for a Disability Claim
Before being approved for disability a person is required to submit information pertaining to their disability. Information from a doctor, therapist and other professionals who know the severity of your disability will be requested. There will be a lot of questions that will need to be answered with very detailed information. Social Security benefits can be provided to individuals who have acquired an injury or illness that is expected to last for one year or until death.
When To Apply
The Social Security Administration suggests that those who have been diagnosed with a disabling condition should apply as soon as possible. Applications may be filled out in person, or by telephone. If you need assistance with the application process someone will walk you through the process over the phone. You can also visit the Social Security website to begin the application process. You should file immediately after your doctor determines you are unable to work.
How Disability is Determined
A person’s income is a determining factor, when it comes to being approved for disability. If an individual makes $1,000 or more a month, they will not qualify for Social Security disability. A disability must be classified as severe by a doctor, meaning the condition interferes with the individual's ability to function, work and care for themselves. An individual's impairment may be medical, psychiatric or psychological.
