Dog Adoption Requirements
Adopting a dog from a shelter or animal rescue is one of the best decisions you can make. Pets who are adopted need homes. Often they have had a rough start in life and will benefit from a family who is willing to fulfill the requirements to adopt.
Animal rescues and shelters work hard to place animals with a home that fits their needs. To some, the requirements seem strict. The process can take anywhere for a few days to a week. Shelters work hard to ensure that animals that have already had a hard life will be matched with a family that is dedicated to the animal for life. Requirements can vary at each shelter; every organization has its own rules about adoption.
Property Requirements
If you do not own your home, you may be required to provide proof that your property owner will allow pets. A home inspection may be performed to ensure that your yard is properly fenced and the home is animal friendly.
Health Requirements
All dogs must be spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. In some rare cases, you will be allowed to adopt before the procedure is done. You will have to provide proof that is has been completed within a set timeframe.
Other Requirements
Potential owners will need to fill out a questionnaire, and the history of the animal will be discussed. Animals that have had issues with either children or other animals may have restrictions on who may adopt them. You must be 18 years of age to adopt a dog. A fee is charged to cover cost of health care and the running of the shelter. You may also have a waiting period while information is verified and to make sure that this decision is the right one for you.
