Dog Behavior Training Tips
If you have a new puppy or an unruly adult dog, there is no time like the present to begin behavior training. The more time you work with your dog, the faster he will learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Working with a puppy is best since they have yet to learn bad behavior, but adult dogs are very trainable.
- Begin your training sessions by
making them short so that you can keep your dog's attention. Go to
an area of your home that is quiet and where your dog will not be
distracted. You want his attention solely focused on the training.
Therefore, keep the training in the beginning to no more than 15
minutes. - Use positive reinforcement to get
the results you want. For instance, you need to have yummy dogs
treats that your dog adores and would gladly trade a trick for a
treat. When he does the behavior you want in training, praise him
and give him a treat. - The easiest way to get started
with the training is with simple commands such as “Stay” “Sit”
or “Come." All of which are one-word commands that your dog can
learn very quickly. As he learns these commands and continues to do
them each time, you can move on to more complex training. - Do not get ahead of yourself. If
your dog is having trouble learning to “Stay” do not rush on to
“Sit” because he will become confused. Concentrate on one
command at a time and allow it to sink in so that he is performing
the behavior every time. Some dogs will learn it faster than others,
but all dogs, regardless of their breed can learn new behavior
training.
