Electrical Breaker Box Problems
Electrical circuit breakers are necessary for all homeowners. They stop electrical flow into the home when something goes wrong with the system. This typically occurs during short circuits or overloads. A breaker box can have problems homeowners need to know about.
Flickering Lights
A circuit breaker box may alert homeowners to problems if the home's lights tend to flicker off and on. This may be a problem with faulty or bad electrical wiring. Unless someone in the home is capable and knowledgeable about electrical wiring, it may be a good idea to hire an electrician. They can safely check the home's wiring to find potential, sometimes dangerous, problems.
Overloads
Using too much electricity in one area of the home, running multiple high-powered appliances and crossed circuit breakers can all cause overloads. Breakers will automatically shut off when this occurs. Unfortunately, breakers can trip or turn off. Homeowners can simply turn the tripped breaker to the "off" position and then turn it back to the "on" position. If the breaker trips again, the home's box or electrical wiring may have a problem.
Short Circuits
This problem happens in bad electrical wiring. When two hot wires touch, they may automatically cause the breakers to turn off. Unlike overloading, short circuits are more serious if the damaged wiring is within the walls. This problem requires the attention of an electrician who can check for potential dangers. Short circuits can also cause house fires. To prevent problems of this magnitude, always check for frayed or damaged wiring on plugs and appliances. Most short circuits occur from these things.
