Eskrima Techniques With Long Sticks
Eskrima is a martial art from the Philippines. There are several variations and one technique uses long sticks as weapons. The sticks vary in length. The average length is around 24 inches long while longer sticks can range from 29 to 32 inches long. Longer sticks are used mainly for largo mano, which are long range techniques. Sticks make effective weapons in the hands of eskrima practitioners.
Grip
One of the most important techniques in eskrima stick fighting is to have the proper grip. This fundamental technique is essential to being able to perform any defense or attack. There are two basic grips to choose from. One grip requires the fighter to hold the stick right at the bottom while the other leaves room between the bottom of the stick and the fighter's grip, a space about the size of a fist. Both methods need the thumb extended. This allows you to brace your stick for the leverage you need to fight. You should always grip the stick firmly, but make sure to grip it loosely enough that you still have some flexibility.
Circular Strikes
You can create additional power using circular strikes. These strikes are done by moving your arm in a circular motion. You can move it around your body, head, or even over your shoulder. The effect is similar to how a pitcher gets more power during a baseball game. The circular motion - the wind up - gives added penetration and power when the strike lands. These are good follow up strikes after you have used a linear strike.
Linear Strikes
A linear strike is delivered on a slightly angled or a straight trajectory. These strikes are the most basic strikes in escrima stick fighting. They are also the most direct. These powerful strikes can be used on the body or head. They are excellent strikes to lead into a series of attacks.
Hook
A very powerful move in escrima stick fighting is called the hook. This move is done by using the butt end of the stick. During a fight, you can step in close to your opponent and use the short end of your stick to hook their neck. Then you can simply bring them to the ground. You can also control your opponent's limbs using the hook or even disarm them.
