How to Change a Brake Master Cylinder

FAQ About Brake Maintenance

Your brakes are an important feature on your vehicle that prevent you from slamming into the car in front of you and other objects in your path. These crucial car parts require routine maintenance to ensure the brakes function properly to avoid a collision.

Q: How often should I change my brake pads?

A: This varies greatly based upon the model of your car, and the car itself. Some vehicles wear down brake pads very quickly, while others last a long time. A dealership or garage is able to give you an estimate of how often your brake pads need changed.

Q: What happens when I have brake problems?

A: A squeaking noise is one of the more common symptoms you will notice first. However, other problems include a loss of stopping power or you have to push your brake pedal clear to the floor. You may also notice brake fluid leaking from the area where the brake line is located.

Q: How do I know if my brake pads need replaced?

A: Besides looking for the warning signs, if your brake pads are less than 1/4 inch thick, replace them.

Q: How do I check my brake fluid?

A: Look at the brake master cylinder reservoir. The location varies based on the year of the car. Anything manufactured prior to 1980 was usually made completely of metal; you will have to remove the cap prior to investigating the fluid levels. On most vehicles, the reservoir is clear and plastic, so you can look to see if the level is lower than the full mark.

Q: What parts of the brake system should I check regularly?

A: Besides pads, shoes and brake fluid, inspect the hoses and brake assembly. Check for damaged parts, worn out parts and leaks.
