Facts on Decking Designs

Finding the right design for your deck can be confusing since there are so many designs and materials to choose from. Take into consideration your activity level and how much you entertain as well how much maintenance you are willing to provide for your deck before making your final decision.

Material

The type of material you select for your deck will affect the appearance, the price and the tools needed to build it. It will also affect the amount of upkeep you need to do to it as well as the overall amount of time it lasts before needing to be replaced. Wood decks are the most common material because of their aesthetic appeal. The downside to them is that overtime they tend to rot and splinter and will need to be replaced. Another alternative to wood is composite material, which is like actual wood, but is resistant to rotting and splintering. It should be noted that composite material is much more expensive than wood.

Free Standing Decks

As the term suggests, freestanding decks are not connected to the house. They are a separate feature and are usually designed a short distance from the house. They can be the centerpiece for a courtyard surrounded by potted plants and shrubs or sit amidst a lovely garden. You can also add a roof or decorative brackets to your free standing deck.

Floating Deck

Floating decks are situated near ponds or streams. They are typically built with a simple flat one-story design so as not to take away from the serene beauty of the water.

Multilevel Deck

A multilevel deck offers a versatile pattern for homeowners. It features a wide stairway that accommodates party seating. The multilevel decks have an attached lattice screen for added privacy.
