How to Open a Veterinary Clinic

Facts on Veterinarians

Veterinarians are professionals who are trained and licensed to work on a variety of animals. This is a field that is expected to continuously grow throughout the years, since people will always have animals as pets. Additionally, these professionals care for stray animals as well.

  • Just like medical doctors, veterinarians may choose to specialize in a specific area within the field. As an example, one veterinarian may opt to practice with zoo animals while another veterinarian only focuses on domestic animals. Additionally, these professionals can further choose to specialize in different areas of medicine, such as dermatology, for when animals have skin conditions and diseases that must be dealt with.

  • In addition to caring for sick animals, these professionals also work on preventative measures, such as teeth cleaning and regular checkups to ensure the animal is in optimal health. By participating in preventative care, these animals are less likely to get sick.

  • Depending on the type of company a veterinarian runs, he can work at various times of the day and night for long hours at a time, especially if he is running an emergency animal clinic. After obtaining a doctorate degree for veterinary medicine, these professionals must then pass a licensing examination.

  • Once obtaining licensure, there is then the option of working for an existing company, or starting your own veterinarian practice. It is estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that the median salary for veterinarians as of May 2010 was $82,040.
