Famous Pop Art Artists
Pop artists create art using iconic things such as celebrities, advertising, comic books and movies. One of the most famous pop artists was Andy Warhol, who made paintings of famous products. Other pop artists include George Segal and Roy Lichtenstein.
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was an American painter, filmmaker and conceptual artist. He was the leading figure in pop art. Warhol made paintings of famous products, such as Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola. He also painted celebrity figures such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. In the 1960s, Andy Warhol founded The Factory, which served as his studio over the years, and where he was surrounded by artists, writers, musicians and celebrities. He would produce prints using the silkscreen method. His work was both popular and controversial.
Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein was a leading figure in the pop art movement. He created art by using old fashioned comic strips as his subject. He also painted reproductions of paintings done by painters such as Monet, in a pop art fashion. His paintings often added a touch of humor, and along with comic books were often influenced by popular advertising. He used oil and Magna paint in some of his well known paintings such as Drowning Girl. He also used thick outlines, bold colors and Ben-Day dots in his work.
George Segal
George Segal is an American painter, sculptor and pop artist. He is best known for his cast lifesize figures. Segal would use plaster bandages as a medium to wrap his model in sections, and remove the hardened forms to form a hollow shell. This hollow shell became his sculpture. Segal kept his sculptures white at first, and later painted them in bright colors. He often placed these figures in environments such as diners or street corners. These environments were built using found objects as seen in his sculpture Chance Meeting.
