Formal Clothes for Men in the 1990s
Formal wear has changed considerably over the years. The tuxedo has been a long-standing wonder amid all the formal wear out there. The changes to the tux have been small, but definitely noticeable. Most formal functions have a dress code that needs to be strictly adhered to.
Men's formal wear has changed since the 1990s. In the '90s, a jacket could be a traditional three-button dinner jacket. Before the 1990s, a man would not be caught at formal functions or events in a three-button dinner jacket. These were considered only appropriate for business occasions. Black tie no longer truly meant black tie. From the 1960s, the Nehru jacket made a comeback in the 1990s. Men would also wear a "Prince Edward," which was a three-quarter-length coat or frock. Colors of ties, cummerbunds and vest emerged as the hottest new thing in formal wear for men in the 1990s.
Vests were the "it" item when it came to formal wear for men in the 1990s. All sizes and colors were welcome. Metallic shades of purple, pink and green were making waves with traditional designers. Bow ties made a huge comeback when the vests came to the forefront of men's formal wear in the 90s. There were men who eschewed the traditional vest and bow tie combo to pair a vest with a Windsor knot tie. Menswear in the 90s was colorful if it was nothing else.
Shirts were also making waves. The banded-collar, Manadrin style shirt was a hot item for men's formal wear in the 90s. This style was very popular with men who did not wish to wear a tie at all. Tradition won out with most of these types of tuxedos in the fact that most of these worn were traditional black and white. Traditional black and white started to take a turn when black shirts were introduced to the tux. These black shirts were usually worn with a Windsor knotted tie.
Suits became formal wear. These suits were okay to wear to formal functions or events as long as they had a tailored and fitted look to them. Suits known as "funeral suits" which were traditional black, could also be worn to a formal function or event during the 1990s.
