How to Apply Badges to a Scout Uniform

Fun Ways to Learn About the Cub Scout Uniform

New Cub Scouts are often eager to learn, and new leaders are often worried how to teach their boys. The uniform looks like a difficult puzzle of pieces, and it can seem overwhelming to learn it all. There are a few simple games that will help boys remember where things go.

Cub Scouts are of an age that learning works best when it is repetitive and fun. Make learning about the uniform part of your den meeting each week to help reinforce the information. If you are a parent, these same games can be used at home with your scout.

Pin the badge on the scout

Create a poster board with a scout in uniform; the boys can help you color it in. Create patches with a sticky back, use Velcro or something similar. The boys will take turns placing the patches and badges on the blank uniform. As they place the piece on, ask them what the badge or patch is and how you earn it or what it means.

Flash cards

Like learning math or state capitals, a child’s memory develops best with repetition. Create flash cards that have a picture of the patch, badge or ranks on one side and the information on the other. As each boy plays with the cards, he will remember a bit more each time.

Memory match

Similar to a game of memory, boys will match cards with the badge and its significance. Boys can take turns matching the cards and helping each other to remember the meanings.
