Gas Piping Service Options

Natural gas is made up of the two elements hydrogen and carbon, commonly known as Hydrocarbons. Most natural gas comes from gas pockets deep in the earth and oceans, which is mined as methane. The methane is processed removing all contaminants and related hydrocarbon gas compounds. Propane, butane, penatane, nitrogen and helium are by-products of methane processing. Gas is quite reactive and only a qualified professional should install gas pipes to a building.

Gas Pipe Materials.  There are different types of gas and different methods of delivery to your home or business. The most common for the home is natural gas and is delivered to homes through underground pipes. Pipes are made from several materials, some specifically used for the inside gas pipe system. Others are used for both inside and outside gas delivery. Some materials are specifically designated for underground gas routing from the street main system to the home.

  • Steel. Though most commonly used with copper, steel gas pipes can be used both above and below ground.

  • Copper. Copper must be type L or K to be approved for gas systems. Generally approved for all regions.

  • Yellow Brass. Yellow brass pipes are commonly used in indoor gas pipe systems. Also appears to have no restriction due to weather or geography.

  • Aluminum. Aluminum pipes are not permitted as approved material for underground gas delivery systems and are not permitted for installation in all states. Aluminum can oxidize in the presence of acidic conditions which make it unsafe in some locations.

  • Ductile Iron. Ductile iron pipes have limited use in underground gas pipelines and are are subject to regional limitations. Iron can rust and become brittle in cold regions.

  • PVC. PVC pipes are permitted for use in underground gas pipeline applications without restriction to regional limitations.

  • PE. Polyethylene pipes are approved for underground outside use, without restriction to regional locations.

  • Flexible pipes. Flexible pipes and connectors are used to connect building gas outlets to appliances, fireplaces or outdoor natural gas BBQ. However, they are subject to approval.
