Geothermal VS Air to Air Heat Pump and Cooling
Geothermal heating and cooling systems use pipes buried below the earth’s surface in order to heat and cool the inside of your home. The system works using a mixture of water and antifreeze. The mixture circulates around a vertical or horizontal loop of pipe – commonly called a ground loop. The circulating fluid absorbs the heat in the ground to heat the home, or heat away from the home to cool it.
Once your geothermal system is installed, they are relatively easy to maintain, and can regulate your home’s temperature much more efficiently than a traditional electric or gas system.
- Consider the energy efficiencies gained with a geothermal system. Consumers that utilize a geothermal system can expect to enjoy heating efficiencies of 300-400 percent, returning $3-$4 worth of heating or cooling for every $1 spent on electricity. The only outside energy required in order to heat and cool your entire home is only what is needed to operate the geothermal unit itself. The actual heating and cooling source is free once the system is installed. These higher efficiencies will, inevitably translate to lower utility bills, and less reliance on gas and oil companies.
- Consider the reduced carbon footprint. Geothermal heating and cooling is an entirely renewable resource, which does not deplete natural resources such as crude oil, natural gas or coal. Increasing development and installation of geothermal systems could be an important step to help the United States become less dependent on foreign oil. Any steps to increase green energy alternatives will help reduce overall carbon footprints by individuals and corporations.
- Consider the advantages of reduced upkeep and maintenance. Geothermal systems are typically extremely durable and reliable, requiring very little in the way of routing maintenance. Exposure to outside elements is all but eliminated because all components are either buried underground, or are located inside the home that they are regulating. Installed underground pipe comes with a 50-year warranty.
