Golf Tips for Children

Golf is a great sport for all ages. Most golfers who pick up the game in their adult years wish that they had started sooner. If you are teaching a child to play golf, there a few tips that you can implement that will greatly increase their skill level.

  • Make sure that the child is playing with appropriately sized clubs. This can be difficult because children can grow so rapidly. If the child is standing very far away from the ball, the clubs are too long. If they are hunched over the ball, their clubs are too short. Take the child to a pro shop so that they can be properly fitted for a junior set of clubs.

  • Golf is better caught than taught for children. Although lessons are necessary for young people, consider taking the child golfing with you.  Since the child can play on the same course as the adult, they can see how golf is played when you are older. They can also learn how to plan out their shots in a way that they cannot on a range tee. Most courses allow juniors to play with adults at a greatly reduced rate to encourage this.

  • Do not neglect to teach children proper golf etiquette. Golf is often portrayed as a game of honor and as a game that has a set of unwritten rules that go along with its official rulebook. Again, these situations are best taught when playing on the course. For instance, teaching a child not to walk in another players line on the green is an important piece of information that probably won’t be taught during a lesson with a pro.
