Good Communication Skills
Good communication skills are a requirement in all aspects of life. Building a true connection with people requires authentic communication. Advancing up the ladder at work often requires managing people and communicating effectively. Leading people in a community or important issues also requires good communication skills.
The importance of good communication skills cannot be overemphasized. Human beings have a need to connect with one another, whether at home, work, in the community or on the ball field. A person with good communication skills connects deeply with other people and has more opportunities to enjoy life. Speaking and listening to people, sharing humorous stories and offering comforting words when a friend is in need, are all examples of solid communication skills.
Communication skills come in a variety of forms. A person may be an excellent communicator in person but have difficulty putting thoughts in writing. The reverse may also be true; a person might be clear in writing because he has the luxury of time to choose the right words, but have a hard time knowing what to say in person.
Nonverbal communication is another important category. Someone may be saying one thing, but the body language and facial expressions may be in complete contradiction. Expressing joy verbally while frowning, and attempting to emotionally connect with another person without looking them in the eyes is another example of sending a contradictory message. A good communicator sends a clear message, both verbally and nonverbally.
Communication skills can be strengthened if a person makes an effort. Trying harder to find the right words, taking time to listen to what others are saying and paying attention to personal body language are a few ways to improve communication skills.
