Good Tile Patterns for Your Home
Tile is an inexpensive, durable option for the flooring in any home. There are so many different options with tile; it is one of the most versatile elements for decorating in your home. Tile patterns are an easy and impressive way to make any room in your home shine.
Borders
Using a dark-colored tile to border the outside edge of a tiled floor will bring the eyes down to the floor. This will highlight the floor and any interesting architectural details much like crown molding does in the opposite direction. Multiple rings or borders can be used to create an interesting pattern. Another option is to use a light-colored tile around a darker center tile. This pattern could be used in any room in a home.
Checkers
Black and white tiles set on a diagonal is a pattern that will give any room instant presence and a retro look. Other colored groupings, such as off-white with tan, will create a subtle textured pattern that adds warmth and interest to any room. This pattern is best in bathrooms and kitchens.
Mosaics
Whether you create a mosaic yourself or buy one that is pre-made, a mosaic will instantly add old-world charm to any room. Traditionally placed in a circle, square or diamond in the center of a floor or wall, a mosaic adds an artistic touch to a room. A mosaic can also be created in borders or at corner squares. Mosaics will shine the best in entryways and walkways where throw rugs will not hide their beauty.
Inlays
Most tile is laid in straight rows. One tile pattern that will change up the ordinary is to add a large, square inlay of tile in the center of a room’s straight tiles. The tiles in the inlay are placed diagonally to add interest in the flooring as the diagonal tiles are in contrast to the design of the straight tiles. Inlays can also be used in borders or at the top of wall tile. Inlays will add to the design of any room.
Radiating Shades of Tile
A beautiful tile pattern that looks like a sunset is to use different shades of tile that radiate out from a center tile. For instance, a dark yellow tile can be placed in the center or a room or wall, and then slightly lighter yellow tiles are placed above, below and to the sides of the center tile. Then even lighter yellow tiles are placed around those, and so on. The effect created is modern and artistic. This tile pattern looks striking on any wall or bare floor.
Random
One pattern that is sure to create interest is one with a lack of any pattern at all. Placing differently colored tiles at random positions draws the eye because of the lack if symmetry. The asymmetrical design gives any room an abstract, modern look. Randomly patterned tile works well in kitchens, bathrooms and as backsplashes.
