Government Employment Benefits

Each agency in the Federal government can offer their employees their own family benefits package. Some packages include 401k retirement, sick leave, vacation and paid holidays. Some of these benefits increase with each year employed as a permanent Federal government employee.

Federal Employee Retirement

  • The Federal Employee Retirement System is a retirement benefit plan made up of three sources: Basic Benefit Plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan.

  • The Social Security and Thrift Savings Plans can be carried over to a new job if one leaves employment at the Federal Government before retirement age.

  • The Basic Benefit and Social Security requires each employee to pay a certain percentage each pay period. The Federal agency pays a percentage, as well.

  • When the employee retires, they will receive retirement benefits for the rest of their life.

Medicare

  • Medicare was originally intended for individuals 65 years of age or older.

  • This health insurance program is made up of two parts: Part A and Part B. The Medicare-Part A covers hospital insurance, and the Medicare-Part B covers medical insurance.

  • Some people that may be disabled can receive Medicare coverage before they are 65 years of age.

  • To receive benefits, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Federal Employees Health Benefits Program

  • This benefit program provides coverage for permanent Federal employees, retirees, children and survivors.

  • The plan has different options such as Consumer-Driven, High Deductible Plans, Health Saving Reimbursable Accounts, Fee-For-Service Plans, and Preferred Provider Organizations.

Leave and Holidays

  • Thirteen days of sick leave each year

  • Vacation time 13, 20, or 26 days depending on amount of service

  • Ten paid holidays each year

Recruitment Bonus

  • A 25 percent of basic salary bonus may be given to new employees for hard-to-fill positions.

  • The new employee must agree to reimburse the bonus if he or she does not complete the time of service agreed at the time of employment.
