Graduate Students' Apartment Guide

Being a graduate student is stressful enough without having to fret about your living situation. When you are a graduate student finding housing can be more difficult than when you began your journey as a freshman. Save the stress for those finals and midterm exams because there are lots of great apartments for graduate students to choose from.

Roommates

First you must decide if you want to live alone or with a roommate. Having a roommate can help lessen the financial burden, cut down on your chore list and give you moral support. If you are more of a private person and are easily bothered by noise or the presence of someone else, having a roommate is probably not the best option.

Location

Since you will be frequently attending classes, make sure the apartment is in close proximity to campus. This is even better if it’s within walking distance, in case of inclement weather. Check if utilities are included in the rent or will need to be paid separately to help you determine your monthly expenses. Ensure that there is an internet connection, since having internet access in your apartment is very helpful. If you are going to be rooming with someone make sure to get separate bedrooms, so you have some privacy. If you prefer to live alone, check out some studio apartments. They will be cheaper and provide you with cozy living quarters.

Furnishings

If you are relocating out of state or don't have any furniture, search for a fully furnished apartment. This will usually come with a bed, desk and couch, but may include other furniture as well. If you are really picky about used items, you might not want to go this route. Consider the location of the apartment in the complex. If you have tenants above and below you consider noise and how you will tolerate it. To reduce the noise level chose an apartment on the end, if possible. If you are concerned about being broken into an apartment that is not ground level is a safer option.

Budget

Consider your financial situation, if you desire a roommate and if the apartment layout will be functional for you. Before making a choice, view a few different apartments.
