Grants for a Housing Association

There are government grants available for housing, especially in blighted areas and locations that are typically low income. Housing associations and landlords that cater to predominantly welfare recipients and those of below average income can seek assistance through one of the programs offered by HUD.

Neighborhood Housing Services

Many cities and even small towns have specific areas that they would like to see improved. Housing associations can purchase properties in these locations and then apply for assistance . Most of these programs are related to improvements for landlords who will use a percentage of their available units for low income or handicapped persons and senior citizens. Matching funds from the property owner is generally a requirement.

Community Development Block Grants

This is another low interest loan, or in some cases a grant, for the rehabilitation of property in blighted areas. This service can be matched with HUD grants and is primarily for urban locations where a high percentage of property use will be for low income tenants.

Energy Efficiency

With energy costs being at an all time high, there are home improvement grants for updating homes and apts with energy saving materials. Heating and air condition units, insulation, and in some cases new wiring could be accepted as part of the proposal.

Rental Help Grants

These grants are designed to help elderly, disabled and low income renters. The Section 8 voucher program is one of the best known to landlords and tenants. Housing associations can benefit from updating properties to be eligible for tenants with these vouchers. Section 8 pays a pre-determined amount of rent for the tenant based on size and amenities.
