How to Clean a Flagstone Patio

Guide to Cleaning Flagstone Patios

Flagstone is a beautiful material to use on patios. As with most things, it does need some care and upkeep to keep it beautiful. It is a good idea to clean a flagstone patio at least twice per year. Perhaps in the early spring and then again in the early fall would be a good cleaning schedule.

  1. Flagstone is a porous material, so you should wipe up spills as soon as they happen, to prevent staining.

  2. When cleaning your patio use, a product made specifically for cleaning flagstone. Read the instructions on the cleaner to find out how you should mix the product. The amount you need will depend on the strength of the cleaner you purchase.

  3. Apply the cleaning solution with a broom or a scrub brush. The broom will be easier on your back. Be sure to get the solution on the mortar as well. Let the solution sit for a few minutes minutes. Put a little extra solution on any stained areas you have.

  4. After allowing the solution to sit, scrub it well with the broom. Again, pay extra attention to areas that were stained.

  5. Use a hose to rinse the cleaning solution off of the patio. Use a lot of water to be sure it is rinsed well.

  6. Look over the patio for any remaining stains that did not get cleaned.

  7. Apply more cleaning solution to stained areas with the broom. Let the solution sit and then scrub with the broom again.

  8. Rinse the areas that were just cleaned again.

  9. Once there are no more stains and the patio has had time to dry, sweep the patio. This will remove any sand or small stones left behind.

  10. If your patio has mold, it can be cleaned with a bleach and water solution. However, this may discolor the flagstone and could damage grass and plants around the patio.
