Guide to Selecting Exterior House Paint Colors
With an array of choices available, it can be challenging to decide which color to paint the exterior of a home. There are some things that should be taken into consideration such as the size of the home and the surrounding neighborhood when selecting the perfect color.
- Consider the theme of the neighborhood. If you live in a neighborhood with older historic style homes, then consider reviewing vintage color charts to recreate the look. You can also go in the opposite direction and change the look by using a modern color to showcase the detailing. Since the home is older, you may need to address issues such as old paint chips before applying new paint.
- Take size into consideration. Not all colors look good on all homes. For example, hues of greens and blues look better on larger two-story homes rather than ranch styles or bungalows.
- Evaluate the exterior accessories of your home. Look for colors that will complement the accent colors that you select for the shutters, exterior doors and window trim. You also need to factor in the outside areas that will not get painted like the steps and railings.
- Think about the neighbors. Even though you are the one paying the mortgage on your home, it is a good idea not to chose an outlandish color and become an eyesore in the neighborhood. You also do not want to copy the exact same look as the neighbors who are living on either side of you. This gives the neighborhood too much of a "cookie cutter" look.
